just to be clear, qantas did operate JFK-LAX-SYD (aka they do operate a flight between JFK-LAX).
they just aren't allowed to transport passengers between JFK-LAX and have passengers get off at LAX without going to australia
and they can't do JFK-LAX (QF), LAX-Tahiti (via QF codeshare operated by Air Tahiti), see below
