This wasn't AA but a few years back, a colleague and I were flying with Turkish but his name was missing the letter "s" at the end of his name on his ticket. He went up to the boarding gate to ask them and they said that it wasn't valid but after arguing and stuff they let him on the plane just before they closed the gate.
I also have had issues in China and to an extent Japan where Jr was a suffix, which AA can't properly handle (so why have that field in the first place.. morons). Fixed it by making my name LASTNAME JR (which was dififcult, to say the least) and haven't had an issue since.
Get it fixed. It likely will never matter when flying AA, but could on other airlines in the future.
