Well, it's actually the McDonnel Douglas DC9-80, originally called the Super 80. Douglas changed their designations from DC to MD sometime many moons ago, and then it became the MD80. If a pilot is rated to fly the airplane, his certificate says DC9 if I'm not mistaken. AA always referred to these jets as the Super 80 and it's sorta stuck with us AA folks. (And former AA'ers too!) However, I hear ya' on the nothing super about it thing. Now that I have to travel for a living, I swear things like IFE make a difference!
