I can see that this allows Hertz greater level of inventory control just for the sake of efficiency/predictability, but the total # of cars to clients would still be the same, it's just that if you self-downgrade, someone else will get a free upgrade--which would seem to create more "joy" or "delight" or "customer satisfaction" or whatever consultant buzzwords they are trying to achieve anyway.

I know if I didn't have status, booked a compact, and was given a luxury car or bigger SUV for my family I'd be happier and more likely to write a positive review, have more loyalty in the future, etc. So it would seem to be a net gain for their company.
