Well, I have personal experience getting credited for Marquee, the Boulevard pool, and several restaurants all earning Mariott points in the past, so I guess YMMV. Those may be the "official" things that work, but in practice they seem to be much less restrictive.
Either way, Identity points are much more valuable, so people should definitely be going for those
