Great news that we can select our seats for free when online check in opens. We don't really care where we are seated as long as the 3 of us can be seated together and it sounds like we won't have any problems with this.
Re the middle seats, for some reason it is only the segments that originate out of DOH that has the seats blocked; SAW - DOH and MIA - DOH don't have this.
I have never flown QR243 since the departure time from DOH was moved from 07:00-08:00 to 01:00-02:00 so I can't comment on the loads.
I have flown QR242 several times and during the summer, that flight might be fully booked as that flight tends to have Qatari nationals, and many transfer passengers to Iran, Iraq and that area; although, the passenger broad on that flight does not check-in online so as I mentioned, earlier, you would be able to select seats together.
For the middle seat block issue, I guess it depends on the station. For your ex-SAW and ex-MIA flights, the respective outstations have control of the seat maps while for ex-DOH flights, the QR operations center in Doha have control of the seat maps. Although, I don't have more detailed information why flights out of Doha have middle seats blocked, while flights to Doha don't.
