I did some research on this hotel a few months ago. I've never stayed at the JdV brand either but my Hyatt Concierge told me they are boutique properties.

The El Capitan is a historic older building that has been renovated I did an online search for the El Capiitan Hotel and found two video reports from local tv news. They showed what the public spaces and guestrooms look like. Sounded like the property is a major part of the downtown Modesto rehab project. I also found a few local newspaper articles on the hotel opening. I remember that they mentioned two types of rooms. Some are historic in their decor, the others are modern and mentioned a Yosemite theme. Several restaurants are planned but it sounded like only one would be open to begin with.
