Had you checked there was J redemption space available or were you just going by the upgrade using Avios banner in MMB? In my experience the latter rarely correlates to there being upgraded seats available so it may well have been a pointless exercise. Keep checking Avios availability periodically. Plus you may get a proactive upgrade offer at some point too for a paid upgrade from W-J for cash.
