Well, I received proactive communication from El Al just now that they will now refund my August 2020 flights. I have not yet received the money.

Yes, they automatically refunded to the card i used. I know that at least in Israel it is possible to refund to an expired card (if it's connected to a bank account)
FYI. this is what they also said:
במידה וכרטיס האשראי איתו ביצעת את התשלום וחשבון הבנק אליו משויך הכרטיס – בוטלו, עליך לפנות למוקד אל על על מנת לעדכן את אמצעי התשלום.
So anyone who has a payment card which has subsequently expired....best to talk to them.
EDIT: I have now received the refund....finally!
