Firstly, ensure that there are tickets on sale for the flight you actually want to take. If a few seats are available, cancel the CP ticket (for P2) and get your(P1) ticket confirmed on the earlier flight. After obtaining a confirmed ticket for P1, add P2 as a Companion to the new ticket for free.

Again - I haven't tried this! If anyone has any experience with this approach, happy to discuss.
I don't think you can add a companion online if your flight departs in less than 1 hour.
