FRA late this morning was waaay more busy than usual as well. I'm thinking it's the three-day weekend (Monday is a federal holiday in both Austria and Germany).
My flights to/from Florence were definitely full - I think you're absolutely right, a lot of people (and I am guilty myself) used the long weekend to dip their toe back in the water of air travel.
