Rather than starting a new thread, I want to provide my current assessment of American BBQ here. Technically, that's probably okay because all BBQ places have sandwiches. There was a ~5 year period after Tony Roma's left the market when we had pretty much no options in this category, but now it's not so bad.
1. Bubba Mac's (on the third floor of McCawley's in Shekou, Shenzhen) is my hands down favorite to the extent that if they opened a location in Austin, I'd probably pay it a visit*
2. The Camel (mentioned in post 1) is my favorite in Shanghai. I've been their 3 times now since they switched to BBQ and have talked extensively with the cook, Matt from Kansas City. He clearly knows the craft well. My only complaints are the lack of side dish variety (they are working to fix this) and the loud sports I don't care about blaring from the TVs
3. Texas Roadhouse comes in at #3 because, even though it is in Pudong, it is super easy to get to on Line 2 or Line 9 (right above Century Ave Stn), good ribs, lots of sides, free bread (quite rare in China), cheap drinks during happy hour (not sure when this is, but I've never been when it wasn't happy hour). Unfortunately their rotisserie chicken is dreadful (would be a good value @Y88 for a half chicken if it wasn't)
4. I'll slate Chili's at #4. Texas Roadhouse might be a little bit better taste wise (except for the chicken), but the main reason I rank Chili's below it is because going there takes a lot more time...solid 10 minute walk from Lujiazui Stn, which is Line 2 only. I can only justify going there if I have another reason to visit Lujiazui (e.g. aquarium, Flair, meeting)
5. Garlic BBQ is actually on this side of the river and is close to Lines 9, 10, and 13. Arguably, it's better than my 3 and 4 picks, but they still run out of food by 3p, and I don't feel like those guys have mastered the art yet (to be fair, they are from Turkey, and they are trying hard to improve)
6. Bourbon Cookhouse has locations at Hongqiao Hub (i.e. basically Hongqiao Stn) and Longbai Xincun (first stop on the south fork of line 10). It's not bad, but it's just as corporate as TRH and Chili's, not quite up to their level, and there's no need to go that far since we have better options
7. I'm including Cages for completeness and because the founder is an FTer, but I'm unable to evaluate it here because I don't go there often, and when I do, it's usually for an event that doesn't serve BBQ. Basically, getting there from Xuhui, the true Jing'an, or Huangpu requires quite a bit of effort. That having been said, they run a tight ship and have high quality standards
*ETA: Bubba Mac's had a reduced menu during my last visit, supposedly because they were renovating.
