My understanding of the reason why it costs so much more to ship a car to Hawaii than from Hawaii is that Hawaii has some sort of import tax on cars, that does not get waived or refunded if the car leaves the state under the same registered owner within a reasonable amount of time (they should probably change that). The 30 day thing wouldn't apply to me because I'd be leaving in 28 days though.
