I'd probably ship my own car there before I ever bought a used car. Hawaii's sales tax rate is 4.167%, so you're looking at about $500-1000 in taxes on anything decent. And anything cheaper than that probably has questionable reliability. And then you still have to ship inter-island, unless you want to buy and then sell on every island you visit.

The other thing you need to factor in is shipping time; it can take many days ir not longer to ship it back/forth, leaving you carless.

In addition to not having anything in the car, you also need to ship it with almost an empty tank of gas.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Wouldn't be an issue with my BEV, but would be an issue with the PHEV. And I'd have to siphon the tank if I found myself in the situation of having a tank too full on shipping day. Using the BEV there would be nice though. I could drive around every island, including the Big Island, completely and still have battery power left. And on every island except the Big Island, I could probably circle more than twice.

Just sit right back and and you'll hear a tale
The story of a fateful ship
That tried to sail from here to there
But couldn't make the trip

The boat was as big as Diamond Head
With restaurants and bars
It held twelve thousand passengers
And fourteen hundred cars

It first sailed east to a neighbor isle
With passengers and crew
All looking for adventure
And something fun to do

But the island folks just turned it back
In no uncertain terms
Saying "no" invasive species
And big bad city germs

The boat got very angry
But the people didn't budge
They said if you want to sail that much
Go take it to the Judge

But the Judge, he didn't waiver
He said "Sorry for this mess
But if you want to see our island,
You'll need an E.I.S.
You'll need an E.I.S." [thunder sound effect]

So the ship turned and went the other way
And headed for a greener isle
But there the people greeted it
With sweet hokone(?) style

A welcoming committee
Showed their warm and friendly moves
There were local hippie senators
And 14 surfer dudes

They met the ship as it came in
But would not let it dock
They blocked its way and sent it back
With the passengers in shock

This mighty ship could not be stopped
By evil terrorists
Instead this boat was shut down by
Environmentalists
Environmentalists [thunder sound effect]

The governor got hopping mad
The legislature too
So they hemmed and hawed and moaned and groaned
To see what they could do

So the ship sits in this lonely pier
With nothing left to do
With the governor
The surfer dudes
Passengers and the crew
Moby Dick, environmentalists
Right here on Pawdagee Isle!
