You can look at various valuations online of United points. The Points Guy values them at ~1.3 cents each, so if there is some redemption you could make now that would be more valuable to you than that evaluation then you should do it. Usually those hotel and merchandise redemptions are way below that, like 0.5 cents per mile so I would feel comfortable holding on for at least a bit longer rather than redeem for hotels or things like that.
