I don't think it's because we're largely isolated, but mainly due to two other factors - supply and distribution. Supply has been sporadic, and we didn't really get our first doses until the beginning of the year. Those were in limited numbers, based on imports from the EU (Pfizer). We have on shore production of Astra Zenica, but that's only started to ramp up in the last month or so. The second issue is the distribution. The Australian government went with a priority ranking (elderly in nursing homes, front-line medical staff, elderly in the general population, and so on). Because of the demographics, they assumed people would want to go to their regular doctor to get the vaccine... which you can imagine there are thousands of doctors clinics. Only recently with supply more readily available have they established mass vaccination centres where anyone can go.

The final issue is the withdrawal of Astra Zenica for those under 50. They have to wait for Pfizer to come later in the year.

So the low numbers is due to the slow and arguably inefficient roll out. But... the fact that we don't have a major problem with covid here means there is no real rush from a medical standpoint. It's not like the US or Europe where everyday counts towards reducing a death toll.

We have our cohort of 'anti-vaxxers' like any country. But I think the majority will line up when it's their turn.
