Interesting reading, too. I guess I am just to "humble". It would never occur to me to tell a hotel we are celebrating an anniversary and then more or less request them to congratulate me and arrange for something special. Too akward.
In fact, we are staying at the HR Zurich Airport again next weekend, celebrating our wedding anniversary. I contacted the hotel and told them about this, but just because I was ordering flowers (self-paid of course) and wanted to let them know why I am doing this, advised them of our check-in time and requested the hotel to deliver the flowers to the room prior to our check-in, so it's a surprise for my wife. I specifically mentioned, they should not arrange for anything special at dinner or at check-in, That would be just too embarrassing for us. I don't want people to congratulate me/us, if I tell them so in advance. If it is noted somewhere on my profile, then fine. That's nice and shows true caring. I used a TSU to upgrade, if they further upgrade, yes, lovely, but no way I'd expect more.
I guess different people are just different, some humble and others expecting. So be it.
