Interesting read on complaints on hotels not providing enough freebees. We all get used to complementary stuff but when not provided we feel wronged...
We too celebrated an anniversary at the PHNY and alerted the hotel in advance through my concierge. But instead of "Hey it's my special day could you do me something special", we asked for the hotel to set up a baby sitter so we can enjoy an anniversary dinner. When we checked in, there was nothing in the room, no card, nothing; but it never crossed my mind to complain to the manager. Had I wanted flowers or a special amenity, I would have ask the hotel to set one up pre-arrival with the understanding that it would be charged to the room just like the babysitter. One the last night of our stay, to my surprise, they brought up a whole platter or chocolate strawberries, a bottle of champaign and some other goodies.
When it comes to complements of the hotel, nothing is guaranteed and nothing should be expected. When you get something, be thankful; when you don't, it was never required of them. If you really want it, ask and offer to pay. Once I asked for a bouquet of flowers at the Andaz and the cost associated; they offered to do it with complements.
