Perhaps I'm overly cautious, but one thing I also consider is what might happen if my flight is canceled. Can the airline still get me to my destination that same day or first thing the following day?

Some of the junky airlines (I'm looking at you, Spirit) only have 1 or 2 flights per week on some routes. In rare instances, that means it might be an entire week before you can be rebooked.
