I really hope this isn't the case, but do worry that it could happen to less experienced travelers who might believe the GAs when told it's their fault or may not even know the difference between J and PE seats. Even I felt pretty much powerless in this situation. If there's anything positive to come of this, I hope there's some way for AA to more effectively clamp down on this sort of behavior (as uncommon as it may be).

There was nobody on the upgrade list, and no J passengers awaiting seat assignments. And this has since been confirmed to me privately by multiple sources.
