Correct, I've stopped toying with the idea of using TK miles just to save some bucks and decided to buy LAX-Hawaii with HA/DL in J and Midwest - LAX with NK + Big Front Seats as the J fares don't fluctuate much if you plan ahead while securing hotel awards (availability with points and free night vouchers) is more critical. I can put miles into KE (my choice of FFP when flying with Skyteam and partners) in the mean time.
In general, I avoid flying with US carriers at all cost even within the US, in particular AA and UA. HA and DL are acceptable in J for non-stops, at least HA has flatbed in A330, probably the best soft product among US carriers. My options traveling here are either driving or flying NK + BFS if necessary, for me just tolerable as you don't have to deal with the masses.
