I wasn't clear, the cancelled trip is from a personal ticket booked with Delta. But I would like to use the credit to upgrade a work ticket that will be booked next week.
This ticket goes back a little less than a year and was rebooked several times. There was a recent schedule change where the HSV-ATL legs went from mainline to Delta connection.
Guess I will be writing down the ticket number just to have it handy. Could be that it is in for a refund, I guess I'll find out more when I try to use it as a credit next week.
I had to call as it could not be cancelled on-line.
Thank you!

The change from DL to DL Connection means you're getting a refund.
This actually likely will make things easier for your upgrade. Its easier to use a CC to pay for upgrade than to try and use another eticket. In fact if you were planning on doing a seat upgrade/FCM offer DL wouldn't be able to use the eticket for payment. You can only combine etickets when purchasing a whole new ticket.

Have you checked whether there's a (pending) reimbursement to your credit card?
Refunds don't show as pending. Unlike with charges, merchants don't get authorizations for refunds. Thus bank doesn't know to expect something.
