Fleet license plates on your rental. Love 'em, Hate 'em, or who cares?
It seems those who fail to remember history are truly doomed to repeat it. Decades ago, Florida moved away from license plates that easily identified rental cars. Tourists were being targeted because of the plates. Now we have at least 3 states that use an easily identifiable license plate on rental cars.
Indiana - 8 digit black on plain white plate, all start with letters FL
Illinois - 8 digit black on plain white plate, all start with stacked F/P on the left side
Colorado - 6 digit red on white version of standard green on white plate, stacked F/L/T on left side
Additionally Louisiana issues plates to rental cars with "Commercial" stamped across the bottom.
I've also noticed that Arizona, Georgia, and Ohio use their regular issue plates, but issue a validation sticker that reads "fleet" instead of an expiration date.
There may be more, feel free to chime in.
My question is this? If you have a choice, are you less likely to take a car with a fleet plate? Years ago, I got a ticket in Memphis in a car with Florida plates. 62 in a 55 on I-240, headed for the airport on an early Sunday morning. Since then, I've been more likely to take a car that "looks local". Don't know how long Colorado has been at it, but the Illinois and Indiana fleet plates are a fairly new issue. So far I've been overlooking the "Fleet" validation stickers. /but there certainly are times I've walked away from car on the Emerald Aisle because of the fleet plate.
What say you?
