If you want to scam the system to earn some elite status credit, do your research to see whether the chosen hotel will ask for you to show up with your i.d. (leaving your friend without a room) Some countries / hotels take a more strict approach to showing ID than the US does.

First, thanks for your response. I have a lifetime plat from SPG that carried over during the merger, and I don't plan to chase any status anymore, be it with hotels or airlines.
I have distant relatives, simple folk who don't really travel or staying in hotels, that I want to appreciate. Due to this damn covid, I can't travel to their location to book the room for them.
I've stayed in one of the hotels in their city, though it was 5-6 years ago. perhaps I just call the property directly, since I couldn't find the number for member support.
