Say you are in US, and want to pay someone in Hong Kong (or Canada, Australia etc).
You have Marriott Points and the credit card.
You transfer your points to your friend and they book the room themselves.
If you want to scam the system to earn some elite status credit, do your research to see whether the chosen hotel will ask for you to show up with your i.d. (leaving your friend without a room) Some countries / hotels take a more strict approach to showing ID than the US does.
