I had both, but I didn't upgrade; I applied separately to get 130,000 bonus points. It all went fine. I finally canceled the old one to save some money after yet another bad IHG experience. Even with the free night, it was becoming less worth it, so having two was not relevant to me, but it was totally fine. I am sure they were just happy to take my money. But take the points, not the "upgrade."
