Cancelling One Segment in a Round Trip Ticket - Married Segment

Hi,
My Onward flight is from MAA-BOM-EWR-DFW and my return flight is from ORD-DEL-MAA [ Air India and United Airlines ], booked through United Airlines

I would like to cancel the EWR to DFW flight and get off at EWR, and tried to cancel this last segment. However, since the BOM-EWR is a Full flight and also since its a married segment, United informed that no changes can be made now.

The Option I was given is that, after I land in EWR, I can call united and tell them to cancel the EWR-DFW Flight.
IN that case, Refaring or Re-Pricing would occur for the remaining flights i.e from ORD-DEL-MAA

I am confused on this Re-Pricing process. Will I get a refund since I am cancelling on of their flights or will have to pay more, ? Does Re-Faring means I have to pay the price for the ORD-MAA flights as of that date ?

Please advise, if its okay to cancel ewr - dfw once i land, or its better to board it and land in DFW
