[Rant warning]
This is one of the best examples of what the CDC describes as "Hygiene Theatre":

It's a bit like the "magic hairdryers" on airplanes and in hotel rooms. It's some sort of bizarre, outdated show that detracts attention from real, evidence-based public health efforts.
Flight attendants carry their own demo bags, so they do not share demo oxygen masks, life vests, seatbelts, or safety card. They aren't going to give each other COVID this way.
If a flight attendant takes off a COVID mask to demonstrate an oxygen mask, he or she is swapping masks for less than 30 seconds, and this is occurring in the aisle. The flight attendant's outward airflow is above the heads fo the passengers.
From a safety standpoint, we know from recent emergencies that passengers often do not wear oxygen masks correctly (they fail to cover their noses), so the demo could really be important if people watched it.
Bottom line:
- Flight attendants need to be vaccinated.
- Airline crews (ground, cabin, and flight deck) need to be vaccinated.
- Passengers need to be vaccinated.
- Get vaccinated even if you aren't travellling and aren't even at the airport.
If we take those steps, nobody has to feel the need to put on a faux "safety dance" about how an oxygen mask demo will give anyone COVID.
I sometimes think that flight attendants (subconsciously or not) prefer these hygiene theatre rather than just getting vaccinated. It gives them more rules, more reasons to say "no," and a lot more time to play Candy Crush.
- What happens in an emergency? Can you evacuate a smoking cabin in 90 seconds with half of the exits blocked? Or do you need to wipe down the emergency exit door handle first? Where's that hand sanitizer again?
- Can you pull out the pin on a fire extinguisher, or--uh oh--what if someone with COVID sneezed on the fire extinguisher? Better not touch that! I guess you should just let the fire play out.
- Can you spot the signs of a stroke? Or are you going to conveniently ignore your duties as a "first responder" because the person having the stroke could have COVID and his or her mask might be askew?
- "Heads down! Stay down! Heads down! A federal mandate requires that face coverings... Heads down!"
Pro tip: get vaccinated, and your risk is far closer to zero. Sure, there are unknowns. It's not 100 percent. But it's a whole lot better than a charade.
Flight attendants are in a position to set an example of how to fly safely. So set an example, roll up your sleeves, be adults, and everyone is better off. And you might not get into mask wars if you join the campaign to get as many people vaccinated as soon as possible. Wow! You could relax and not have to be on mask enforcement duty anymore. Imagine that!
The best incentive I can think of: you can't hand out credit card applications inflight due to passenger contact and touching paper applications. No more $50 per approved credit card (or whatever the incentive was.) That vaccine is suddenly more appealing if you can resume making a special announcement about a special offer just for today's flight!
