The Safe Travels QR code is checked by airline staff at departure gate, who then issue a wristband, vs. by airport employees upon arrival (which can be a lengthy wait at times of multiple flight simultaneous arrival). Wristband allows to skip the arrival screening and lines at the airport.
Not just that, but it also catches anyone who’s test isn’t valid (either outside the 72 hour window or not an approved test) before they arrive in Hawaii. I talked to someone on the Safe Travels phone line and was told that they have lots of issues specifically with Delta and American arrivals with people showing up with invalid test and needing to quarantine for 10 days or get sent back to the mainland. They say this doesn’t happen too often with the airlines participating in the wristband program because these issues are caught before ever boarding the flight to Hawaii and not afterwards!
