As long as the primary (paid) passenger is the one flying there's no issue. The issue is when the paid passenger doesn't fly, but the companion still wishes. Technically the companions ticket is dependent on them flying on same flights as paid passenger. However in actual practice there's generally no issue if this happens on the return portion.
