Talking No status miles with US

The other thing about a UA code share flight with US is that you get 500 miles and a segment count with UA, BUT, you don't recieve the miles towards earning upgrades. I honestly don't understand the rational for this. If I purchase a ticket from UA that is a UA flight, why shouldn't I get status miles with UA? I notice that when I am trying to purchase a ticket on United.com, I am getting a lot of US flights--it seems to me that UA is trying to sell me a product that is UA-Lite in terms of the frequent flyer benefits. I wouldnt' mind the difference if I had an equal choice to fly UA or US, but often the computer is only giving me US options when I am ticketing. It almost seems like UA wants me to fly the code share more than UA metal.
