yeah, the DL standby/upgrade list is pointless the way presented. Standby includes those confirmed but needing seat assignments and those not confirmed on flight "standing" by to get confirmed. Total seats is simply unassigned seats, even for upgrade list, which doesn't show people till they checkin. You'll show number 1 when really there's 10 ahead of you, they just haven't checked in.
