No free standby historically is a revenue protection thing, since all the daily flights don’t cost the same. People would otherwise book the cheaper late night flight then show up and standby on the expensive one they really want.
I do that sometimes and consider it part of my elite benefits.
That said, it's a risk that I don't clear and end up on my originally booked flight. In which case, no harm no foul.
