AA rebooked me in coach after canceling shorter segment (it took serious effort to preserve transcon one but thankfully a helpful agent was willing to escalate) and refunded fare difference - ended up being about $60.
I followed up with cust relations and they explicitly stated I was not entitled to any comp - only fare difference.
