I've only had this sort of thing happen with 3rd party sites, Expedia etc. They charged me and I got there and no room, no trace of a valid booking. Somehow Expedia failed to let me know my booking was no good. But maybe thats what Marriott effectively is in Design Hotel's case?
It isn't a question of whether Marriott can or will do an audit of the system. It is a simple fact that neither Marriott nor any vendor is going to report back to OP with its results. Thus. not worth OP's time.
As noted above, this comes down to what he could have done on the spot, e.g., walk and possibly pursue a chargeback which might not have worked vs. what he can do now. Now, it is in the past and cannot be fixed. All that can happen is that he can be made a bit more whole.
