Whether this was a tech glitch, someone at the property double-booked and would not admit it or somebody paid off the manager to dump you, is nothing the property will admit to and nothing Marriott can really do about it.
While that might be true it would be a woeful indictment of the state of Marriott's IT if no one can actually find out what happened, I'm guessing somebody at Marriott could quite easily find out what happened, or at least who was at fault. In my opinion an error or intentional action on the part of the property is most likely. It's probably in everyones interest to name the property in any case. Was the rate a particularly good deal?
I've only had this sort of thing happen with 3rd party sites, Expedia etc. They charged me and I got there and no room, no trace of a valid booking. Somehow Expedia failed to let me know my booking was no good. But maybe thats what Marriott effectively is in Design Hotel's case?
