Marriott has many more options toward the top of the chain than Hilton when looking for resorts and places like that. From what I understand, Marriott generally wins when it comes to the upgrade game for those with high status. Premium rooms can be booked with points at Marriott too for prices that are just expensive rather than certifiably insane compare to the base rate.
This is broadly my experience and opinion as well. I think the credit card earning and benefit spread is better on Hilton than Marriott. I get the very well-trod argument that Hilton gives away top status for an annual fee; it seems to make money for them and the card itself is pretty useful, so...

I’m using 2021 to sample life as a Marriott Platinum and Hilton Diamond (and possibly 2022 as well). Perhaps my opinions will change (a mild preference to Hilton where it works, occasionally nods to IHG or Marriott, very willing to book off of hotels.com instead resigning myself to a poor location or limited choices outside the US). I’m mostly staying in mid level places with occasional splurges.
