I never set foot in a Best Western after the front office at a location refused to provide any benefits...I promptly went to a Marriott property across the street and never looked back at a Best Western. t depends where you're going as to whether you can go to a Marriott / etc property across the street.
There are plenty of small towns (including near many national and state parks) with only a Best Western and either no chain hotel alternatives or the only hotel alternatives being Choice and/or Wyndham, and at none of these 3 programs is status anything more than a way to earn more points.
So if you only stay in big cities, you can avoid Best Western. But in small towns, the "big" chains are much rarer.
