Yesterday I was able to call the Diamond desk and they were able to swap my 2 night points stay to a 2 night stay using FNC. They were able to do this even though there was no standard room availability so it can be done. The CSR had to reach out to the sales team and they were able to hold the room in some capacity while the CSR cancelled the points stay and booked the FNC stay.
That is excellent news, thanks for sharing: supports the adage of if not successful hang up and try again.
