Just finishing up a week-long stay using points. We had a one-night stay in a 2 queen room on the 22nd floor overlooking the ocean and another 6 days in an oceanfront suite at the end of the napili tower (not overlooking the luau). In the last two months, we've spent three weeks on Maui including two in Wailea at the DR property in both 1 and 2 bdrm units. I have two kids, 7 & 8. Overall, we've really enjoyed all of our stays and each property has it's pros and cons. We've never really done the "sit by the pool all day getting sun and having a few drinks" thing - we're generally on the go, more adventure seeking but we wanted to try this out. Conclusion: It ain't a bad way to spend a few days

although a week is a bit long.
Property: Overall, it's excellent. We enjoyed the pool almost everyday. Was more crowded last week and had to get up early (before 8am) to get some chairs but that was easy enough to drop off some towels and return on and off so we didn't lose it. The beach is a little narrow and gets rocky once you get 20' in but having said that there is one spot you can wade out further and the snorkeling is pretty decent. Overall, beaches much better in Wailea. We also tried out the Residence Club pool. Generally prefer the regency but I have two kids 4' high and the residence club pool's shallow areas are only 3'5 whereas the regency is 4', which is a bit deep for themto just stand up in. But still, they prefer the Regency with the waterfalls and slide.
Rooms: Both of our rooms felt brand new. Super clean, service everyday, great views. I thought the 2 queen room as very spacious and the suite was a bit tight (another 100 sq ft would have made a world of difference), although the bathroom is much nicer in the suite. Suites also had Keurig coffee machines and the reg room just had those crappy 1-2 cup machines you only find in hotels. They sent up a microwave which was nice to prepare some meals for the kiddos without having to shell out $14 for mac and cheese takeout each time (there's a little store in the hotel that sells various food options like this as well as salads, sandwiches and beer - overall, I found it pretty well stocked and reasonably priced for a resort shop - or maybe I've lived in Seattle too long.
Restaurants: All the food was surprisingly good. Japango was legit delicious. Highly recommend it. We also ate at the steakhouse and it was great. Even poolside food was pretty darn good. Used our globalist credit to eat at Swan Court every morning. Lines were long the first few days but this week much quieter and easy to get into. I'm generally not a breakfast person but the kids love it. Lots of fresh fruit and pastries along with different eggs and potato options. We're overeating but ti's nice to sit down on the pond and relax the way into the morning.
Excursions: We didn't do any paid excursions this time but did a walk from Star Noodle to Lahaina (atmosphere is gerat but found the food pretty meh) one day and the coastal walk in kapalua from merriman to the ritz another day (about 4 miles once you take all the little side trips). Worth doing. Ritz Burger shack at the DT Flemings beach was pretty good. Dinner at Merrimans last night was fantastic. Dinner at Westin up the street was pretty good and great atmosphere. Also at Joey's kitchen in Whalers (not the same as the one in Napili which I'm told is much better). It was fine.
Side note: Taxis are kinda hard to get right now and Uber is basically non-existent on this side of the island. Apparently, uber drivers are all on unemployment. We had the most luck with AB Taxi but one day I called 3 different companies and nobody had a taxi available. Just something to keep in mind.
