Just started a 4 night stay here. For spring break time, I thought the hotel was surprisingly inexpensive and booked the “Groom Suite” at a modest premium over the regular 1-Bedroom Suite. I also have a regular room for additional family traveling with me.
There are many pictures of the Groom Suite on the hotel’s website and they’re pretty accurate so I won’t add my own. A few notes:
- For one of the hotel’s two premium suites, I think a little more thought could have gone into some parts of the design. For example, there’s no shelf in the shower for soap/shampoo. There’s a very large walk in closet, but no light so it’s hard to see what you’re doing in there. The shower door also doesn’t quite close, so the bathroom floor gets soaked. My son is sleeping on the fold-out couch, he’s slept on lots of them without complaint but did note he felt the springs pressing into him on this one.
- The Groom Suite looks absolutely nothing like an HP room. The finishings are all much nicer; feels more like a somewhat downscale W / Andaz room to me.
- Although I think the pictures on the hotel’s website depict it well, the room feels smaller than it looks in the pictures.
- The view is of the highway and mountains behind it. I live in a city and am used to noise, but the highway noise is something different and there are trucks and loud cars all night. The room desperately needs a white noise machine. A white noise iPhone app helped with the problem somewhat. I would highly recommend avoiding the highway side unless you’re completely unbothered by noise.
- As others have noted, the breakfast is better than typical grab and go garbage. Today there were frittatas and breakfast sandwiches, not great but not awful either.
- I think Jayer describes the location well above as being about one block too far from downtown. The location is just a tad strange, tho I don’t feel unsafe.
- There’s a small fitness center that’s open, looked like an eliptical and bike and two treadmills. The indoor pool remains open.
- Finally, given my hatred for paying for parking I parked on Montford Ave in an unrestricted spot about a 4-5 minute walk northwest of the hotel.
We visited the
Craggy Mountain Railroad today and had a blast, my wife chartered the trolley and we had a private 2 hour ride for our family. The cost is reasonable if you have enough people. My 5 year old absolutely loved it and I wanted to post here as a recommendation for something unique for others with children. We brought a picnic lunch, the trolley took us to a picnic spot and waited for us while we ate, then kept going. The guy who runs it, Rocky, is a great guy as well.
So far, I’m not sure I’d rush back to this hotel, but it’s nice to have the Hyatt option. I might try the AC hotel next time, based on location and exterior alone. Happy to answer any questions while I’m here and I’ll update if anything else comes up on my stay.
