Neither.

You don't need it every year. BW has a habit of not lowering your status level for years at a time after getting a status match or earning status. I was matched to the second-top status, and then earned the very top status, several years ago, and ever since then that status (Diamond Select) has been carried over for me every single year even though I usually don't do enough nights/stays to re-qualify for it each year.

Keep in mind that status at BW doesn't mean much beyond earning extra points. That's presumably why they renew it so easily.
