Just experienced the new system 2x last week and it was as bad as predicted in terms of overhead bin space. By the time we boarded E+ (“Rows 20 and lower) most of the seats were occupied and the bins in the front of E+ were basically full. I find it hard to believe these were all GS/1K preboards but who knows. Somehow I managed to rearrange a couple of bins and found room for 4 rollaboards (1pp) but it was not easy and the FA urged me to look farther back (I declined as I prefer not to swim upstream for deplaning).
For the 2nd flight I decided to preboard as I need extra help with the bins due to a shoulder injury (true - torn rotator). We were first on and thus no problemo. However it was easy to see why the bins fill as the FAs announced “just take any bin” when the boarding reached row 25. Zero concern about preserving space for the elites in E+
If UA is not going to preserve one of the few remaining perks that I value (overhead space) then I will just do it myself.
I've been enjoying(?) the back to front boarding and many variations there of weekly. I tend to travel heavy so I take advantage of pre-boarding and after getting comfortable I like to sit back and watch the show.
