My situation was I chose to cancel back in that March-April timeframe, they had not cancelled the flight. We were going to a concert that was cancelled, so no reason to head to that city. At that time, given those circumstances, a credit was my best/only option.
I never in a million years even considered going back and asking for the cash now, until I read this thread. But I'm ok with my credit. They were generous on the date, it's good until 12/31/2022 (although I keep forgetting whether that is "book by" or "fly by"), in either case I'm sure it will be used.
Delta may even exchange your ticket but your YMMV I canceled a flight due to the pandemic in March a day before the flight. The flight was eventually canceled but I personally canceled it before they did. several months later Delta even exchanged for me and the flight several months later was a couple hundred more.
