Exactly... multi-city changes the fare (in fact, it adds around $300 more which might be the stopover fee ISTFlyer was referring to). I have an EU passport and am fit to fly to all destinations on the itinerary (well except for any Covid-related restrictions that might arise). However, I had no idea that short-checking the bag could be rejected with a layover of 21-22 hours. That would be a huge problem as I need to check a bag.
Normally I wouldn't be looking into skiplagging, but $1350 compared to $500 is just.. unfair!
