If you click on "benefits" on the Amex website and scroll down to "Airline fee credit" then you will see a statement about how much is available to use. If you see "You have used all of your $200 Airline Fee Credit for this year." then you know it worked... this usually appears a day or two before the actual credits post. Note that this info seems to have been removed from the Gold card page, possibly because the benefit has gone away for new card holders.
