Let's start with a Pan Am 707 to ... hmmmmmm ... could be either Miami/MIA or Tampa/TPA; let's say the latter; in any case, the next leg would have been Eastern with to Atlanta (I'll offer a 727-200 to start) to Atlanta, and Delta 106 up to Dulles/IAD (this last was actually PA metal, a 747-100 operating the interchange flight that continued to London/LHR)

First - I apologize - I meant to specify Washington Dulles (IAD) While in theory your routing would seem quite plausible, a check of the schedules available to me shows that it won't work. Pan Am does indeed have a 707 up to Miami that arrives at 12:10pm. The next two possible connecting flights are a pair of widebodies operated by Delta and Northwest respectively. After that, the next JT8D powered aircraft out of Miami (a United 727-100) doesn't arrive in Atlanta in time to connect to Delta's IAD bound 747. Now Northwest's DC-10-40s were powered by the JT9D engine but the problem is that after Delta's 747 departure, there are no more flights to Dulles. Additionally, it won't work for the JT3D, JT8D and finally JT9D in order parameter. SO - we've got to follow a different routing, but one that I'm confident will come quickly to you. Tap-in time!

  2. Braniff likewise had gone to the 727/72S for short- to medium-haul flights Correct!
  3. National never ran twinjets of any ilk Correct!
  4. Northwest didn't get their first twinjets until the Republic merger Correct!
