There is an alternative. If you are an Executive Club member you can use OLCI at Departure minus 23:59:59. If you are not an EC member then you can OLCI at Departure minus 11:59:59. Both options should give you the chance to grab two seats together.
You can also try using Manage My Bookings to change your seats. Since making your booking others may have changed theirs opening up two seats together.
If all else fails then asking the occupant 12F to swap is more likely to work than asking 12K.
