Either way, I am still going to board last as I usually do. I can afford to do this as I usually travel light; any carryons I'd normally have can go under the seat in front of me.

Based on my observations, boarding by BGs has been just as chaotic if not worse. You will always have the following set of people on every flight:

1) those unable to follow instructions
1a - on purpose with the goal to cut the "line"
1b - by accident

2) DYKWIA - self-explanatory

3) those inconsiderate once on board - e.g. taking an eternity to place bag in overhead | getting up multiple times after seated

bonus: (some) gate agents unable to provide clear set of instructions, and/or not practicing enforcement even after announcement

I will keep hang back, and enjoy the people watching.
