I would presume that the procedure and success would be similar for using IHG free night awards for a reservation for someone else as for using IHG points for a reservation for someone else.
So you may want to look around to see if there have been discussions about the latter at some point in this forum.
(Myself, I've never booked a reservation for someone else with points or an award except at Marriott, and that was long pre-merger.)
